Academic Staff Member – Spatial Design

We are seeking a passionate and experienced educator to join our Spatial Design team. This role offers the opportunity to inspire future designers through studio-based teaching, curriculum development, and research or creative practice. A strong commitment to bicultural practice and Māori cultural capability is essential.

 The appointing salary for this role will be between $74,400 and $97,700, dependent on skills and experience.   

About the Spatial Design Programme

Our programme explores the intersections of the commercial and residential interior design, and urban environments, with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and community engagement. We are committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and embedding mātauranga Māori into our teaching and design practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging studio and theory-based courses in Spatial Design.
  • Contribute to curriculum development that reflects diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Support students’ academic and creative growth.
  • Maintain an active research or creative practice profile.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to foster an inclusive, bicultural learning environment.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Being conversant with current industry-relevant spatial design software and other digital design tools, and sustainable design practices. 
  • A degree in Spatial Design, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Experience in tertiary teaching and curriculum development.
  • Industry currency, a strong portfolio of professional work.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori, or a commitment to developing this capability.

Preferred Attributes

  • A Master’s in Spatial Design, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Experience embedding mātauranga Māori into design education.
  • A developing or established research profile.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary and community-engaged design.
