Director - Communications

Are you a strategic communicator, people-focused leader, and storyteller at heart? Wintec | Te Pūkenga is looking for a Director – Communication to guide the organisation as they navigate change, re-establish policies and processes and roll out the institute’s communication workplan.
You’ll sit at the heart of our organisation’s narrative—providing trusted advice to senior leadership and working with a small but talented team to deliver high-impact communication across internal and external platforms.
This is a hands-on role – there’s lots of work to be done. No two days are the same and we are looking for someone who can navigate a busy, ever-changing environment, while not losing sight of the long-term picture.
The Director - Communication based in Hamilton is a 0.5FTE (20 hours) fixed-term position that reports to the Operations Lead and will be responsible for:
- Developing and implementing a strategic annual communication plan aligned with Wintec’s priorities.
- Provide expert advice to the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams on public relations and key issues.
- Build and maintain relationships with media to enhance Wintec’s reputation and visibility.
- Lead internal and external communication channels, including intranet and social media.
- Manage the creation of corporate publications such as the annual report and strategic plan.
- Oversee the performance, growth and development of the Communications Team.
- Ensure clear, culturally inclusive and engaging communication that reflects the diverse communities we serve.
- Collaborate closely with the Head of Marketing & Engagement to deliver a unified brand experience.

To be successful in this role you will have:
We’re looking for a senior communications leader who thrives in complex, fast-paced environments and brings authenticity, strategic vision, and collaborative leadership to their mahi.
You will bring:
- At least 6 years of senior communications experience and 10 years of leadership experience.
- A relevant qualification at Bachelor’s level (communications, marketing or similar).
- A confident, inclusive leadership style that builds capability and brings people with you.
- Experience managing media relations and leading through reputational risk.
- A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and advancing equity for Māori, Pacific, and disabled ākonga.
- A strong track record of delivering effective internal and external communications in large or complex organisations.
