Wintec is one of NZ’s largest Institutes of Technology providing quality education and training in the Waikato.  Our Centre of Health and Social Practice delivers health professional programs in nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, counselling, social work and primary health care. Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi | About the Role

Our Centre of Health and Social Practice delivers professional programs in social work, counselling, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, and primary health care. If you value working collaboratively and have the expertise and experience to teach core social work theory and skills, we are keen to hear from you. 

The appointing salary for this role will be between $74,400 and $97,700, dependent on skills and experience.

He kōrero mōu| About you

We currently have a full-time permanent position for an Academic Staff Member (ASM) available within our social practice teaching team. To be eligible for consideration, you will: 

  • Hold a postgraduate qualification in counselling or psychology
  • Have sufficient knowledge to teach psychology, human development, counselling approaches including Pōwhiri Poutama, Narrative Therapy, CBT and/or PCT, indigenous liberation studies and working with whānau to undergraduate counselling and social work students
  • Have a competent application of Te Tiriti Informed practice, mātauranga Māori  and kaupapa Māori knowledge and worldviews in education as well as the well-being sector. 
  • Have a competent application of mātauranga Māori in education and/or social services. 
  • Possess a valid permit to live and work in New Zealand 
  • An ability to teach Te Tiriti o Waitangi related content, tikanga and basic te reo.

Skills & Experience


  • Hold a tertiary teaching qualification 
  • Mātauranga Māori and kaupapa Māori, Powhiri Poutama in relation to social services
  • Counselling approach knowledge and skills - Narrative Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Have experience in the field of health care, mental health, or social practice 
  • Be able to teach and support ākonga/students in a manner that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi  
  • Be able to teach face-to-face and on-line, moderation and assessment 
  • Be active in research, scholarship and/or critical reflective research 
  • Possess a valid permit to live and work in New Zealand
